Test Results

Wondering how and when you will receive results from your recent tests? Below we answer your questions so you know what to expect.

How we communicate test results

Abnormal or significant test results will be communicated to you, with a plan for the next steps.

We usually use email for communication of test results. We will phone in certain circumstances.  We endeavour to communicate a brief message regarding normal results by text or email. The volume of test results means that our priority is managing abnormal and significant results.

The doctor/clinician who requested your test is responsible for reviewing, communicating, and actioning your test result. If your test/scan was arranged by another clinician outside of Epsom Medical Centre, and you have not received the result, please get in touch with them in the first instance.

If you are signed up to our online Patient Portal, you can now access your Test Results:

The test results become visible on the Patient Portal once they have been reviewed and signed off by the ordering doctor. They are not available immediately.

Depending on your results, you may be asked to come in for a further appointment to have further blood tests or asked to continue to monitor your own progress.

If you continue to be concerned about your health, or your condition does not improve, please get in touch with us to arrange an appointment for further review.

Results Time Frame:

  • Routine blood test results are usually processed by the lab in 2-3 days. Many sophisticated tests take one week or more for reporting, some tests are sent to labs elsewhere in NZ or overseas and can take some weeks.
  • Private X-rays and scan results are usually available within 2 working days.
  • There are significant delays for reporting of X-rays undertaken by the hospital, and reports can take up to a month to be received.
  • Reports from scans arranged by specialists in hospital outpatient clinics are usually sent to the requesting specialist. It is variable whether the report is sent to us or not.
  • Cervical smear results take approximately three weeks.
  • Surgical biopsy results take 3-4 weeks.

Remember you can make a follow-up appointment at any time to discuss your results or view your results online through our Patient Portal.
