Dr Alistair Somerville

Dr Alistair Somerville

MBChB 1997 Auckland; FRNZCGP 2006

A born and bred Aucklander, Alistair studied at Auckland Medical School, graduating in 1996. He had a passion for surgery, but in 2000 he discovered General Practice, found he loved it and never looked back. He comes to Epsom Medical Centre from 12 years at nearby Cairnhill Health Centre.

Alongside General Practice, Alistair has extensive experience in skin cancer diagnosis and biopsy, and he has a special interest in men’s health and leads the Auckland Men’s Clinic which specialises in sexual dysfunction.

Alistair aims to support and encourage people to build healthy lives. He will first work with people to see what non-medical things can be put into place to meaningfully make a difference to the situation. When medical treatment and investigation are needed, he takes a lot of care to prescribe and refer carefully and thoughtfully.

Married to Rebecca, a paediatrician at Waitakere Hospital, Alistair has three teenage children. His interests outside of work are largely outdoors. New endeavours include surfing with his daughter at Muriwai and fly fishing in the Tongariro. He seems to find catching both waves and fish a bit elusive!

“I believe that good communication and working as a doctor-patient team is the best way to deliver high-quality healthcare. I have a special interest in women and child health and am passionate about delivering healthcare that considers the whole person.

My husband is an oncologist and with four children ranging from pre-school to high school, my life is very busy! I enjoy spending time with my family but when I do get a spare moment, I indulge my passion for reading.

I look forward to working with you.”
